THE STORY BEHIND “108”
On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse swept across the U.S. for the first time in 99 years. Millions of Americans came together for it, becoming the most-observed and photographed moment in our history.
Astronomy photographer Jon Carmichael did something unprecedented to capture what many say is the greatest photo of an eclipse ever achieved; He mapped out all the commercial flight paths around the U.S. and compared them to the Moon’s shadow and decided on a Southwest Airlines flight from Porland to St. Louis. He never could’ve imagined what happened next - below is the full story.
“I was immediately struck by Jon’s photo. But, like most things, the story behind it was awe-inspiring. So excited for the world to hear it, and be reminded of that moment we were all looking at the sky together.”
